Can You Kick the Booze ... By Yourself? ... Part 2
This is a continuation of an intel I started a couple of days ago http://www.qondio.com/can-you-kick-the-booze-by-youself . (I hope this works so you can review it). So far I've covered two elements that are vital for getting sober and staying sober: Self-honesty and Get Help. And believe me, they are vital! Don't be Afraid! Many people flounder and fail, at first, in their attempt to stay sober due to one factor. Fear. Fear of the unknown. Let's face it, as our drinking habit becomes more deep seated, we develop some unsavory habits and friends. One of the reasons we keep on drinking is to keep from looking at what we have become. I know, for me, it wasn't a pretty picture. So, let's get it right out there, some of the unfounded fears that might cause you to stumble. ) Fear of life without alcohol. That's the biggy. ) Fear of losing friends. Scratch this one right away. If they're not friends while your trying to get sober, they weren't friends to start with. Maybe "drinking buddies," but not friends. ) Fear of Responsibility. Geez, now, without a head full of booze, we have to look at and deal with all the stuff, real and imagined, that we've been ducking for so long. Bummer. Short of a major crime, most problems can be worked out and put behind you. I know that many of my fears had been magnified out of proportion. If you're bewildered as to how to proceed, get help and counseling. There's helpful and legitimate agencies all over the place. Remember, you need to do this, but you don't have to do it alone. I breezed by that "major crime" thing pretty fast, didn't I? As I said at the onset, I'm not a professional anything. All I can say is that I've known many people who've admitted their crimes, served the time, and are now on the streets with that all behind them. Was it easy? Hell,no! ) Fear of drinking again. One of the primary reasons for this fear is that people tend to think in terms of "I can never drink again, for the rest of my life." To diminish this fear, think in smaller bits of time. Like one day. Say to yourself, "I can stay sober, completely free of alcohol, for just one day. Hells bells, any 'under the bridge' wino can stay away from alcohol for just one day." Then think it and say it aloud every morning, or any time your resolve starts to get shaky legs. OK, that's it for this intel. Part 3 in a couple of days. If you have questions, agree, or disagree; leave a comment. Remember, Self Honesty, Get Help and Don't Be Afraid!
