Can You Kick the Booze ... By Youself?
Sorry to put such a rude hook on this article, but I wanted to generate some curiosity if possible. Today is my birthday ... I'm 76, so I thought I'd reward myself by writing about something that, in turn, might be helpful to others. I'll get right to the point. I quit drinking alcohol on Oct 8, 1972, and have enjoyed a sober, relatively happy life ever since. Anything I say in this article is gathered strictly from my own experiences. I'm not a doctor. Not a therapist. And certainly not a do-gooder. Here, as I see it, are the main ingredients for getting sober and staying sober. 1.) Above anything else, HONESTY, personal honesty, is paramount. What I'm talking about here is your need to communicate with yourself in the most forthright way possible. Not all the surface BS, but at a deep level where BS doesn't exist. I don't give a rats what you say to those around you (mom, dad, wife, husband, sweetheart, boss), I only care what you say and admit to yourself. Now if your problem with alcohol is hard core, you may be incapable just now of being totally honest with yourself. But, don't use that as a cop out. Even if your only honesty about your drinking is to think, "I'm tired of coming home drunk, parking in the wrong driveway, and puking on the neighbors dog." That's a start. Build on it. The more sincere you are in seeking self-honesty, honesty about your drinking, the less you'll BS others. This is vital in getting help. 2.) And there it is: if you come to an honest ... or near honest ... admission that you have a drinking problem, you need to get HELP. I'm not jivin' you about this; it's next to impossible, if you have a chronic drinking problem, to have any lasting success at being sober, trying to do it by yourself. You may have tried it already. How'd that work out? Where can you get the help you need? Recovery from alcoholism is a big business. There's a recovery facility on almost every street corner. OK, I was screwin' with your head there, but the point is made. There's help everywhere. The thing is, that help is not going to come looking for you at the liquor store or corner bar. Nope, sorry, you need to seek out the help. And for a lot of you, don't expect your family and friends to come running to help, either. My family was so worn out from helping me, words like, "I'm really going to quit drinking this time," meant nothing to them. Sound familiar? OK, I posed the question where's the help? Here's some definite possibilities: -)Alcoholics Anonymous. Look in the phone book. -)Federal, State, County, and Municipality Mental Health Agencies. -)Salvation Army. Yep. they have some excellent counseling in this area. -) Your family Doctor. You know, the person you tell, "Oh, I only have a couple of drinks every now and then." -) Psychologists and Psychiatrists who specialize in addiction problems. If they tell you they'll teach you to drink with impunity, head for the door. -) Churches, believe it or not. Many churches have non-preachy recovery programs. -)Recovery Facilities. Some are pricey, but some are supported by government funds. If you're really shaking it out, this may be a good early fix. Make sure they've got a good structured plan for recovery, not just a dry out joint. I'm going to call this Part 1 of a series. Please consider these first two elements seriously, and stay tuned for Part 2 on Monday, the 26th. If you have any questions, please leave a comment. Gene
